Long Taper vs. Medium Taper Tattoo Needles: What's the Difference?

By Fred Pinckard  •   2 minute read

Two boxes of 13 curved mags can look identical on the shelf and still run completely differently. Most of the time the difference is the taper. If you've ever wondered why one box packs color fast and another gives you softer gradients, this is why.

What is taper?

Taper is the length of the ground-down point at the end of each needle, from where the needle starts to narrow to the very tip. The longer the taper, the thinner and more gradual the point.

That point controls two things you feel in the machine: how much skin each needle opens, and how much ink comes off on each pass.

Medium taper: the everyday workhorse

A medium taper has a shorter, sturdier point. Because the needle widens sooner, each pass opens more area and puts down more ink. That means:

  • Faster color packing and solid black fills
  • Bolder lines that hold up
  • A needle that feels punchy and gets the job done in fewer passes

Our medium tapers have a textured finish. The slightly rough surface holds more ink on the needle, which helps with saturation.

Long taper: control and softness

A long taper has a longer, finer point. Less of the needle's full width goes in on each pass, so it puts down ink more gradually. That means:

  • Smoother gradients and subtle value shifts
  • Black and grey realism built up in light layers
  • More control when you're working soft transitions or fine detail

Our long tapers have a polished finish so the needle glides in and out smoothly. That suits the lighter, layered passes long tapers are made for.

How taper fits with the rest of the code

Taper is one piece of the label. A box marked 1213CM-LT reads as #12 gauge (0.35mm), 13 needles, curved magnum, long taper. Gauge sets needle thickness, the count sets the size of the grouping, the configuration sets the shape, and the taper decides how it all hits. Our Tattoo Needle Size Chart & Configuration Guide breaks down every part of the code.

Which should you pick?

All Lineage needles are 316L stainless steel, designed by tattooers with 25+ years in the chair, and available as bar needles and cartridges.
